Hongbongseon Ganjang Gejang Bong Menu Review|Large Female Crab, Hours & Parking

If you are looking for a place in Ansan that serves larger soy-marinated crab, the Bong menu at Hongbongseon Ganjang Gejang (홍봉선간장게장) includes a large female crab with complimentary spicy marinated crab. I chose this menu because I prefer larger crabs that are easier to pick apart, and I especially liked that the crab tasted fresh and the soy marinade was not excessively salty.
The Hong menu also includes a large female crab, but it comes with grilled abalone and king prawns as additional items. If your priority is the large ganjang gejang itself, the Bong menu is another option worth comparing.

What is included in the Bong menu?
The Bong menu I ordered came with a large female soy-marinated crab and complimentary spicy marinated crab. Both the Hong and Bong menus were options that included the larger crab size.

| Menu | Items confirmed in the original post |
|---|---|
| Hong | Female crab (Large) + spicy marinated crab (complimentary) + grilled abalone + king prawns |
| Bong | Female crab (Large) + spicy marinated crab (complimentary) |
| Seon | Female crab (Small) + spicy marinated crab (complimentary), 3 crabs per person |
| Ge | Female crab (Small) + spicy marinated crab (complimentary), 2 crabs per person |
| Jang | Male crab (Small) + spicy marinated crab (complimentary), up to 4 refills per person |
I chose the Bong menu because I prefer properly picking meat from a larger crab rather than eating several smaller ones.
Unlike the Hong menu, it does not include grilled abalone or king prawns and instead focuses on the large female crab and spicy marinated crab.

How meaty was the large ganjang gejang?
With smaller crabs, the amount of meat can sometimes feel disappointing compared with the effort needed to remove the shell. The large crab I had here felt more substantial, especially in the legs and body.
There was a good amount of meat in the body when pressed, and the larger size made it easier to pick out generous bites to eat with rice. For someone who prefers bigger crabs, the Bong menu matched what I was looking for.
Fresh crab without a strong fishy taste
Freshness is one of the things I pay the most attention to when choosing ganjang gejang. Even a good marinade can be difficult to enjoy if the crab itself has a strong fishy smell, but the crab I ate at Hongbongseon Ganjang Gejang did not have an overpowering fishy taste.

The crab meat was soft and moist rather than mushy or as if it had been marinated for too long. The body also contained a satisfying amount of meat, which paired well with rice.
Is the soy marinade very salty?
What I liked most was that the soy marinade was not excessively salty.

Rather than having an aggressively strong soy sauce flavor, it was seasoned enough to let the flavor of the crab come through. It was savory and salty without being so intense that eating the crab meat on its own felt overwhelming.
It also worked well to place some crab meat over rice and add just a little of the marinade. If you prefer ganjang gejang that is less intense and less salty, this was one of the more notable characteristics of the meal.
Mixing rice into the crab shell
After eating the crab, I added rice to the innards left inside the shell and mixed it with some of the soy marinade.

The rich crab innards and savory soy marinade worked well together. Because the marinade was not overpowering, the rice still retained the nutty, rich flavor of the crab instead of tasting only of soy sauce.
Between the crab meat and the rice mixed into the shell, my bowl of rice disappeared faster than expected.
Complimentary spicy marinated crab is included
The Bong menu also included spicy marinated crab in addition to the large female soy-marinated crab. It gave the meal another flavor to alternate with the ganjang gejang.

The main reason I chose the Bong menu was the large ganjang gejang, but having the spicy marinated crab alongside it was also a useful part of the set.
Who may prefer the Bong menu?
- You prefer large ganjang gejang rather than smaller crabs
- You would rather pick meat from one larger crab than eat several smaller ones
- You do not prefer an overly salty soy marinade
- You want both a large female soy-marinated crab and spicy marinated crab
- You do not need the grilled abalone and king prawns included in the Hong menu

Based on this visit, the crab size, freshness, and moderately seasoned soy marinade were the most memorable points. If I visit again, I would still prioritize one of the menus that includes the larger crab rather than the smaller size.
